DJOP cites danger of another Trump candidacy

Former President Donald Trump’s plan to run again in 2024 “means a return to the divisiveness and fact-free public discourse that marked his years in office,” Democratic Jewish Outreach Pennsylvania (DJOP) said today.

In a statement by the political action committee’s board of directors, DJOP called last night’s announcement by Trump “a transparent ploy to shield himself from any number of state and federal legal investigations confronting him,” including charges that he  pressured state officials to overturn the 2020 election results, incited the violent January 6, 2021 insurrectionists, stole classified documents and took them to his private club in Mar-a-Lago, and headed businesses that committed financial irregularities in New York City.

Jill Zipin, Chair of DJOP, said that even though Trump exaggerated the accomplishments and ignored the failures of his four years in office, “we do not take his run lightly.”  She said:

“Donald Trump is a threat to democracy and to both Democratic and Jewish values.   His Make America Great Again followers remain committed to him and are fully prepared to work for his reelection.  But we as Jewish Democrats will do all we can to ensure that a twice-impeached insurrectionist never holds the office of President again.

“We reject Donald Trump’s politics of division, and the anti-freedom politics of his party’s wanna-be Trump imitators.”

Zipin said the nation “cannot afford a return to the discord that marked the Trump administration, nor his ranting and policies that Kevin D. Williamson, correspondent for The Dispatch, described in the Nov. 15 New York Times as ‘deformed, depraved, backward and, in the end, fundamentally anti-American.’”
