“When a judge is elected in Pennsylvania, they serve a 10 year term. When that term is up, they don’t run for re-election as we typically think of it, rather they have to run for retention. Instead of running against another candidate, the question on the ballot just asks if they should be retained as a judge, yes or no. If more people vote yes than no, they receive another 10 year term.
Typically, retention races are fairly straightforward, and most judges get retained. This year, however, MAGA Republicans are planning to pour millions of dollars into a “Vote No” campaign against our 3 Democratic State Supreme Court Justices. As a direct result of these justices, we’ve seen rulings against gerrymandered maps and efforts to overturn the 2020 election, among other things. The PA Supreme Court is a firewall against efforts to strip away the rights of Pennsylvanians, so the MAGA Republicans want to take down that firewall.”
We at DJOP have endorsed all 7 judges on the PA statewide judicial ballot and we encourage you to vote yes to retain in all of the retention races. Click here to read more about our endorsed candidates.
