The board members of Democratic Jewish Outreach Pennsylvania (DJOP) called today for the Trump administration to remount the educational panels on slavery that were removed Jan. 22 from Independence National Historical Park.

Jill Zipin, Chair of the state-wide political action committee, said the removal “is a shameful desecration of an important educational exhibit.”

The panels honor the nine individuals enslaved by President George Washington and his family when they lived in Philadelphia from 1790 to 1797. They were removed under orders from the Trump administration in what Zipin called a “Trump fantasy that they distort history and foster national shame.”

The panels had stood for more than 15 years. “True patriots learn from our history. True patriots have no fear of facing the truth about our nation’s past,” Zipin said. “The Independence National Historical Park exhibit was accurate and important. DJOP believes it must be restored without delay.”
