Donald Trump reached a new low of making a fool of himself yesterday by claiming that
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has “become a Palestinian,” Democratic
Jewish Outreach Pennsylvania (DJOP) said today.
Seeking to insult the Minority Leader for his role in ongoing budget negotiations, Trump
said, “Schumer is a Palestinian as far as I’m concerned. You know, he’s become a
Palestinian. He used to be Jewish. He’s not Jewish anymore. He’s a Palestinian.”
Jill Zipin, Chair of the state-wide political action committee, said,
“Trump’s personal and nonsensical attack on Schumer’s religious faith while trying to
make an unrelated point about the budget is yet another example of his frequent
trafficking in antisemitic slurs while exhibiting how unqualified he is to lead our nation.
“Trump’s bigoted remarks are antisemitic and Islamophobic. Equating all Palestinians
with Hamas simply is wrong and undermines those Palestinians who seek peace and
who suffer under the terrorist organization. Ultimately it pushes prospects for peace
further away and makes Jews less safe.
“Who gave Trump the right to decide a person’s religion, in the first place? Not since
Nazi Germany did a head of state believe that he had the authority to question
someone’s religion.
“Trump’s blatant indifference to those in need and the ill violates the most basic
teachings of Christianity. DJOP never would question Trump’s commitment to his own
religion. But it might be time for him to give some thought to what his faith teaches. He
has insulted Jews, Muslims, Christians and anyone else who believes that our religions
have taught us that all humanity deserves respect.”
